Living Water
It seems like summer has arrived! With the warmer temperatures comes the increased struggle to keep our bodies hydrated. Drinking water is essential for our human bodies. Sometimes children do not even realize they need that water until you give them a cup of cold water and they feel the refreshment that it brings. They may be thirsty, but looking for sodas or snacks instead of water that they actually need.
Plants dry up more quickly during these days of warm sunlight. If you give them a source of water, they flourish and their leaves grow strong and green as they reach for the sun.
God placed in all of us a thirst for something that will fulfill us. It is as much a part of our spiritual and emotional need as physical water is for our bodies. It is absolutely essential that we discover that one thing that satisfies that longing in the pit of our soul. So often we look everywhere for the answer to that thirst, except for that one place that can actually satisfy: Jesus. Jesus tells us that He alone can fill that emptiness in our soul.
John 4 tells us of the encounter that Jesus had with "The Woman at the Well." This woman had sought to fill that emptiness in her heart in the arms of men. She could not find a man to satisfy her searching heart. She had been married 5 times and was currently living with yet one more man. She was looking for the perfect man. She found Him at the well. He offered her what she did not even know she needed: Himself.
The question for us today is, where are you seeking fulfillment? Often we can come so close and still miss the most crucial answer to our seeking heart: Jesus. We can do so many good things, but if we have not discovered Jesus we have missed the mark. There are those of us that try to fill that void with drugs, alcohol, or relationships. Others of us may think we have it all figured out and are even a little prideful that we don't do "those things." Instead, we stay busy working -- inside the home, or outside. Maybe we volunteer for wonderful causes. But still that void is there, and we never can find the one thing that brings us that sense of rest and complete fulfillment. Until we have found Jesus, our souls will continue to feel empty and unfulfilled.
Jesus offers us that spiritual water that refreshes us. The living water He gives us is a continual spring that feeds our dry hearts forever. We just need to realize our need. He is waiting to fill us with Himself. When we come to the end of ourselves and realize that we are sinners in need of His grace, He will pour out His grace and mercy into us. He saves us from eternal death. But it is so much more!! He wants us to ask Him continually for that refreshment that He offers to everyone. Seek Jesus and find that living water that fills our hearts and souls. Allow Him to hydrate your soul so that you can lift up your hands in praise that comes from a pure heart of thankfulness!
Soli Deo Gloria!
