Joy In Seeking Him
How much of our time do we spend looking for things? Some of you are extremely organized and are able to locate things easily. I am one that is not naturally extremely organized, but have been trying to glean tips from those who are gifted in that area. As I grow older, I am slowly gaining some ground there, but I still frequently spend too much time looking for things! Often, the search is half-hearted until a crisis arises, then it becomes desperate! The joy, comfort and relief that is felt when that item is finally discovered (probably in the "safe" place I placed it in myself!) is so good, isn't it?
Do we put the same effort into seeking to know Jesus as we put into looking for those lost keys or that lost form that needs to be filled out? As King David was handing the Kingdom of Israel to Solomon, he gave him specific instructions:
Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the LORD your God.
1 Chronicles 22:19
This was the most important piece of advice that David could give Solomon to prepare him for this life as leader of God's people. He told him to be totally devoted (heart and soul) to this one task: seeking God. This is that desperate, feverish kind of hunting that we have when we are looking for the car keys and running late, or that permission slip that fell down between the microwave and the wall. David had learned from experience that seeking out the mind and heart of God brought the greatest joy. He wrote so many Psalms that tell us of the great blessings that come from seeking the Lord, His will and His guidance.
Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and His strength, seek His face always.
Psalm 105:3-4
Sometimes it takes times of crisis before we are motivated to seek out the Lord. David was telling Solomon not to wait until he was in a panic mode before he began to start knowing the mind and heart of God. Knowing God anchors you and when the time of crisis arises, you have His Spirit and words to guide you through. Don't wait. Start now. This type of seeking means more than just knowing that there is a God. This involves time, effort and focus in getting to know Who and What God is. How is this done? You guessed it: through the Word of God. That is where God reveals Himself to us.
We are so blessed to live in a time where we have many aids to learning what the Bible has to say. Most Bible versions are available in an audio version. There are apps and tools that help us search out topics or verses and even compare translations. Look for Scripture set to music. You will be surprised at how much is out there! There are blogs, vlogs, podcasts, YouTube videos, social media pages and so much more that are anchored in Scripture and can help you in this quest to know God and His heart. However, there is no substitution for the quiet, reading of the Bible for yourself. That is where God is found and His Spirit will guide you to knowing Him.
Today I encourage you to start the journey of seeking God. He is not hiding. He is eager to be found by you. He has given us everything we need to know in the Bible. We simply need to seek out His character and truths through digging into the Word. The simple act of looking to God at all times brings peace and ultimate joy. Seek Him today!
Soli Deo Gloria!
