Fill My Cup, Lord!

Do you ever wake up drained -- exhausted before the day even begins?  Do you ever want to bury your head in the pillow and hide from everyone and everything?  I have heard it called sensory overload, or "needing a mental health day," and other similar things.  Sometimes as a mom, the children pour out their needs and I just don't seem to have anything to give, even for the most simple of requests.  My patience may run thin and I snap over a minor infraction.  Even worse, I may not correct them when they need correction because I "can't deal with it right now."  Sound familiar?  It may be a different source for you that causes you to feel that your "cup has run dry."  Perhaps it is work, friends, or other family members that seem to drain you.  Have you ever heard the phrase, "You can't pour from an empty cup?"  Where do you go when your cup is dry?  Do you turn to vacations, shopping, TV shows or movies, or concerts? All of these can be good breaks from the regular pace of life.  However, they can't "fill your cup" for very long.  Life soon returns to usual and you find that cup dry again.
Thinking of this scenario reminds me of a song I heard in church as a child.  It runs through my head and points me to the source that never runs dry.  Read the lyrics:

Like the woman at the well
I was seeking
For things that could not satisfy
And then I heard my Savior speaking
"Draw from My well that never shall run dry"
Fill my cup, Lord
I lift it up, Lord
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul
Bread of Heaven, feed me 'til I want no more
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole
There are millions in this world
Who are craving
The pleasures, earthly things of gold
But none can match the wondrous treasure
That I find in Jesus Christ my Lord
Fill my cup, Lord
I lift it up, Lord
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul
Bread of Heaven, feed me 'til I want no more
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole

Here's my cup, fill it up and make me whole

What does Jesus fill our cups with? Romans 15:13 tells us:
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 5:5 says:
...God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Jesus fills us with love, joy, peace, and hope through His Spirit! He tells us in John 4:14 that this source never runs dry:
But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
One thing that jumped out to me as I was reading these words is that Romans 15:13 tells us "that you may overflow..."   We are meant to share this hope, joy and peace with everyone we come in contact with!  As we share, our cup continues to overflow.  What a concept!  He continually fills as we share Him to those around us!  If our source never runs dry, than we are able to share continually, as long as we stay tapped in to the source, Jesus!  Remember the widow whose oil never ran dry in the Old Testament when she obeyed the Word of God given to her through Elijah?  It is the same picture. A continual source of renewal, of God's Spirit!  The Holy Spirit indwells every Christian and we have that source within us.  However, if we insist on finding our love, joy and peace in earthly things, we will find that well runs dry very quickly.  Our cups are not aligned with the correct source.
Those days that I feel that I can't handle another, "Mama!" or that I feel defeated and dried up, I often realize that my relationship with Jesus has been interrupted.  A few moments in the Word and in prayer realigns my heart (or cup) with that stream of living water that Jesus offers.  Then I am able to share His love again from a cup that is filled to overflowing.
Imagine the impact of Christians overflowing with the the love and joy of Jesus!
My prayer is that you are filled to overflowing today!  His well never runs dry and He longs to pour His Spirit into you so that you can share it with everyone around you!  Align your heart to His!
