Mission-minded

Life can become so mundane sometimes.  We fall into our daily routines and dream of the weekend or vacation time when we can sleep in or break out of the usual hum-drum cycle of life.  Fatigue sets in and often we go through the motions of our lives, barely noticing everyone around us is doing the same thing.  It is easy to grow cynical or just plain grumpy when we have to repeat a task for the billionth time.  (Do the kids and/or animals really have to eat again? Will the laundry pile ever just stop?  That pile of paperwork is growing exponentially by the moment.  Do I really have to answer that question again? Maybe if I close my eyes the dishes will do themselves...) It is no wonder that depression and discouragement easily overtake us, leading to questions of the purpose of living.
What if we realized that God has a purpose for our lives?  Would that not make even the mundane more palatable? God does have a purpose for each one of us! God has tasked all Christians with a mission: to proclaim His praises.  This isn't something reserved for only the talented or those called to special positions of leadership or public Christian service.  This is ALL of us who have been washed in the blood of the Lamb.  I Peter 2:9 tells us:

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.   His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

 I Corinthians 10:31 reminds us:

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all things for the glory of God.
As we accomplish our daily routines, the attitude and demeanor with which we do them is a witness to those around us.  We reflect the character and person of Jesus to those around us as we bring praise to the Father through everything that we do.  There are people all around us to whom we are called to minister. Our children and/or grandchildren are a mission field and they are watching us.  We are witnessing to them daily through the way we live and respond to every minute detail of life.  Our spouses are encouraged when we faithfully accomplish our daily tasks "as unto the Lord."  Our managers or supervisors need to see and experience the hands and feet of Jesus at work, just as the widows and orphans do.  There are people all around us who need to see faithfulness in action.

Are we striving to proclaim His praises to everyone around us?  We are called to do EVERYTHING (not just some things) for the glory of God.   All Christ-followers are called to do this!  No matter our age, socio-economic status, occupation, or physical abilities, we are called to do whatever God enables us to accomplish with an attitude of worship.  (Proclaiming His Praises = worship!) This is our mission. God sees and is pleased when we do this.

This is what sets us apart from the rest of the world.  When we are focused on bringing glory to God through everything we do, we are safeguarded from falling into sinful actions and pastimes.  This attitude ministers to those around us.  It brings glory to God. The Church of God is edified and grows.  Furthermore, as we point others to Jesus, He blesses us!  Proverbs 28:20 promises:

A faithful man {or woman} will abound with blessings.

You can't get much more simple or clear than that! As we tackle our tasks, ordinary or extraordinary,  remember to give give praise to the One who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light!  This is our mission. We have a calling.  We were created for a purpose.
