The debate over the sanctity of life is back in the news again. Times like these bring questions from our young ones about a lot of terms that may not be familiar to them. It hurts my heart that our young children even hear about such atrocities as abortion and euthanasia. As my husband and I attempt to answer candidly, yet age appropriately, our primary focus has been to show our children that all human life, from conception to rightful death is precious in the eyes of God. Unfortunately, even Christians are influenced by the world's views on this matter. On the matter of the sanctity of life, Christians should be on the frontline of the battle. Increasingly, we are at best complacent and non-committal. Often this is simply from a lack of a Biblical world-view. When we remove the Bible as our textbook for life, we lose our anchor and the secular world-view seems reasonable to our mind. But do you know the truth from the Bible on this topic? Are you armed with the truth to take on the darts of the enemy? Human life is precious because God created it in His image. In Genesis we are given the creation account. Not only does this teach us that all of the world is created by God, but it shows us that humanity was created in a very special way. God physically formed man from dust and breathed into His creation His own breath to give it life. No other animal or plant was created in this manner. Each and every life is the product of God's divine, intelligent and intentional design. The Bible goes on to reinforce this over and over in Scripture. Even those considered handicapped by our society are created by the tender Hand of God.
Exodus 4:11 tells us:
Then the LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?
Not only are we created individually by God, we are created in HIS image. Genesis 1:26 is clear in this. To devalue life at any stage is devaluing God, who created life in His own image. We must impress this in the hearts of all who are questioning the value of any life, themselves or others. To see the purpose of a life plagued by heartache or disease, we must start by realizing the source and intentional design of all life. We are created in His image for the intended purpose of glorifying Him. Each one of us, from before conception was in the mind of God. Read Galations 1:15. Jeremiah 1:5 tells us this:
Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations
There is no life created that was not intended and formed first in the mind and heart of God. Period. No matter how dismal or tragic we may view a life from this side of eternity, God declared that life was to be, and He knit that life in the womb for His glory. God makes it clear that He loves all of humanity. Read Psalm 8 or Matthew 6:26 and you will see that Scripture confirms this. In fact, He loves humanity so much that He sent Jesus to redeem us. There is no greater love! He did not redeem a meaningless blob of cells. He was redeeming man, who bears His image. How precious in the sight of God we must be.
I beg you to look into this more. Read what the Bible says about God's love for every person, at every stage of life. Not only will each of us respect all stages of life more fully, but we will see our own lives as reflections of God's image and full of purpose!
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful,
I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14
