Jesus Is The Word of God
This Word was Jesus. We have multiple verses in the New Testament that make this clear. The Greek word for Word is Logos.
And the Word (logos) became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
When we look in a mirror, we see an exact reflection of the image in front of it. I can't see my own face until I look in a mirror. Around some curves or intersections, safety officials place mirrors to reflect the image of objects that we cannot see normally because of our limited vision. These images may be moving vehicles and we know that we need to beware or perhaps wait until they pass. Mirrors can make a lot of things visible.
Similarly, Jesus is the reflection of the Father. Through Jesus, we see the exact representation of our God. That is because Jesus is God and He is the Word (logos) of God. John tells us this in his first epistle.
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and touched with our hands, concerning the Word (logos) of life -- the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it, and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and made manifest to us.
I John 1: 1-2
Using this terminology, word, to describe the Messiah would have made perfect sense to the Jews familiar with the Hebrew scriptures. Their word for God, Yahweh, was never spoken. It was too holy. In fact, when written, it was written without vowels, JHWH, because it could not even be written in full. They often substituted the Aramaic term memra, which means "the word." So when John explained to the Jews that "the Word" had come, they understood him. They knew he meant the Messiah.
Jesus is God revealed to us. Through Him we can hear the words of God, see the full character of God, and know God intimately. He is the voice and the image of God the Father because He is God and was with God since before the creation of the world. Jesus reveals to us the heart of God and the entire totality of who He is. He came to earth in human form so that we could see, hear, and touch Him. Jesus reflects the full image of God. How amazing is that?!
Today, we can see and hear Him through the Scripture. With the Holy Spirit leading and teaching, we have a complete picture of the All-Knowing, All-Powerful, and All-Present God of the universe in Jesus. He is the Word of God and through Him we can know God. Is that not magnificent? It is life-changing and powerful to realize our God cares enough to show us Himself.
This is such a small snippet of the impact that studying the Word of God can have. I invite you to look into this topic more. Open up the Scriptures and one verse at a time, get to know the Father as revealed in the Son. It will change your life!
