Jesus Is The Amen
When we hear something frequently, we kind of get desensitized to it, don't we? I anxiously waited for Bentley to say "Mama" for the first time. Now, after 15 years and 7 children, hearing someone call out, "Mama!" blends in to the normal everyday noise and I don't stop to realize how precious it is to have that title nearly often enough.
How often do we hear or say, "In Jesus' name, Amen." without stopping to think about what we are saying or just heard? I am guilty of this over and over again. It is entirely appropriate for us to close our prayers with these words. But, why? Did you know that Revelation 3:14, Amen is given as a name for Jesus?
To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.
Revelation 3:14, NIV
Jesus is "The Amen!" What does that mean? Amen mean that something is absolute, certain, or true. In Nehemiah we find that the people affirmed the Word of God after it was read by saying, "Amen." Often, as we affirm a truth spoken to us you will hear, "amen" as a response. Amen is the equivalent of saying, "It is truth. I (we) agree. Let it be so."
The Hebrew word for Amen is one of the Old Testament words for God. Literally meaning, "Truth" or "Faithful" this word describes God's character. Over and over in the Old Testament God is referred to as "the one, true God." or the "Faithful One." There are too many to list here. Look it up! It will amaze you and strengthen your faith. Isaiah 65:16 states not once, but twice that God is the God of Truth (the Amen).
Because the one who is blessed on the earth will be blessed by the God of truth; And the one who swears an oath on the earth will swear by the God of truth; Because the former troubles are forgotten, And because they are hidden from My sight!
Isaiah 65:16, NASB
In Sunday School on Sunday, Tyler taught about Jesus being the exact representation of God the Father. In John 1, we read that Jesus IS one and the same God as the Father. If we know and understand this, then it makes sense that Jesus would refer to Himself as "the Amen." in Revelation 3. Looking at the church He was speaking to will further help us understand why He used this term at this particular time. The Laodicean church was full of instability, compromise and wayward thinking. Jesus is the opposite. Jesus is truth and always has been! He is the Unchanging, Faithful God.
Since Jesus is Truth (the Amen), we can trust all of His promises. Every single one is a certainty. Because He is Truth (the Amen) we can believe He is Who He says He Is. Because He is Truth we can know He will do what He says He will do. All we need to do is trust.
Does it make more sense now that we close our prayers with, "Amen?" As we say that closing word, we are saying, "It is true. He IS TRUTH! Let it be so." I know this understanding will lend deeper meaning to my prayer life and I pray that it will enrich yours in some small way as well.
May the God of Truth, The Amen, be your source of joy and rest today and everyday!
